Latrobe has been heavily impacted by the closure of the region’s biggest employers in the coal-fired power industry. To combat large job losses and unemployment, Latrobe City Council had to look to the jobs of the future to help the region get back on its feet. Meshed has provided a LoRaWAN IoT network for Latrobe, complete with coverage and our people counting solution. This has assisted in a crucial facet of the regeneration effort – fostering New Economy STEM skills and IT knowledge for the community.
Meshed deployed LoRaWAN coverage across Morwell and Traralgon to support a number of council data gathering initiatives. In addition, both communities were provided with with free-to-access LoRaWAN IoT networks. Our people counting solution, nCounter, has been employed by Latrobe City Council to track the number of people in their recreational facilities and precincts.
The community can now bring low-cost devices and components to build Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors. Once connected to the LoRaWAN network, these sensors can retreive data for free, 24×7. This initiative is vital in encouraging IT skills and concepts. Schools, TAFEs, Universities and the innovators in the community now have a great free asset for building the skills that are already valuable today, and moreso skills of tomorrow’s economy.
